Gophers leave mounds of dirt in a horseshoe shaped pattern wherever they are creating tunnel systems. Gophers are serious consumers of vegetative matter so an easy to spot sign of gopher damage is the dying off or wilting of plants/trees or the complete disappearance of small plants.

Gophers inhabit all of North and South America. Here in California we have the California pocket gopher and it is native throughout the state from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Diego Coast. 

COMMON WAYS TO DETER Gophers:

There are devices that are sold to deter gophers these typically work on the principle of vibrating the ground every 30 seconds or so. While these devices will work for a short period of time after a while the gophers realize that they are not a threat and will no longer be deterred by the devices. There are also "gopher-proof" planting baskets that are sold but they only protect the crown of the root not all of the root runners.
